About My Approach

What is an Integrative Approach?

Integrative psychotherapy is a blended approach taking elements from different therapeutic approaches.  This allows for a much more flexible approach, giving me the ability to be adaptable to your needs and draw on whatever theoretical approach is appropriate to you in the moment.  My integrative approach is a combination of the following modalities.
Person Centred Therapy
Picture
Person Centred Therapy (PCT) is a holistic approach which works on the assumption that all individuals have an internal natural drive toward well being and healing.  I would seek to gain an understanding of your perception and work within your frame of reference.  As a client you would experience the 3 core conditions of therapy:

  • Unconditional Positive Regard
  • Empathy
  • Congruence

As a result of these conditions a completely non judgemental and accepting environment is created, in order to put you at ease and encourage you to talk openly about your innermost thoughts so that we can explore them.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a modality focusing on the concept of learnt behaviour and thinking patterns.  Having built rapport over the course of a few sessions we would begin to examine your thoughts around various issues within your life.  Instead of looking at positive and negative, this approach views thinking as either accurate or inaccurate and it is designed to identify any of these thoughts which may be impacting your struggles.  By identifying these it allows us to work on them to develop new thinking patterns and bring about psychological changes as a result.
Attachment Therapy
Picture
Attachment Theory (AT) is focused around relationships with others, with particular emphasis on early years and relationships with primary caregivers.  This theory states that these initial early relationships create a blueprint for how we view and interact with the world.  This relates strongly to CBT as this blueprint create cognitive pathways, and thinking patterns that provide us with assumptions on how the world works. By examining these relationships we would seek to understand how they might be playing out in your present and what impact they are having.

Overview
These are only an idea of the therapeutic toolbox that I work with.  It is my priority to put you at the forefront of everything that we do and as a result we will only work with whatever you want to bring into our sessions.  All of the modalities I work with are evidence based, and I am happy to answer any questions regarding them if you are uncertain about any of them.

I can provide support for a range of struggles including:

Anxiety
Depression
Bereavement/Grief
Eating Disorders
Sexuality
Gender Identity

Trauma/Abuse
Suicidal Thoughts and Self-Harm
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Anger Issues
Low Self Esteem
Addiction
Should we uncover in our sessions that you are facing significant struggles in any of these then it may be appropriate for me to signpost you to a counsellor or service with further specialism in that area.
